What makes a good candle?
History of Candles
Candles were first mentioned in pre-biblical times as early as the 10th century BCE. In those times they were made using ordinary straw wicks pushed into flammable liquid. This method was present for many years until around 500 BC when the Romans invented the first recognizable candle. They used an ingredient called tallow which is essentially rendered animal fat. Although these candles had the shape and the scent of the candles we see today, they were anything but nice. As you can imagine. Thankfully for us, they have come a long way. They have developed over time through shape, size, and most importantly aromas.
AromaHoliday Candles
When choosing a candle, you want the best quality which is affordable, aesthetically pleasing, and has a long-lasting burn time. Here at Aromaholiday we achieve all three! All our candles contain non-GM soy, manufactured from sustainable and renewable sources! The wax used is made from soybeans that haven’t been treated with pesticides or herbicides while growing! Soy wax does not give off petrol-carbon soot into your room and it burns cleaner than paraffin alternatives. As well as this our candles have no added colorants or dyes.
When choosing what candle you should buy, materials should come as a big consideration. Usually, businesses use either soy wax, paraffin, or beeswax. Below, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of each wax, so you can choose a candle that suits you.
Soy candles
Soy candles are non-toxic and are cleaner burning as they contain no toxins, carcinogens, or pollutants. When burning, soy wax candles produce less smoke than other types because they are vegetable-based. This means they are less likely to cause allergic reactions and have no staining on walls or ceilings. The soy wax has a slow burn time so it will last longer. The melting point of soya wax is 120 degrees. They have a strong scent throw and are one of the healthiest candles to use and are very sustainable.
Paraffin Candles
Paraffin candles are used widely in the industry as they are Inexpensive to produce. As well as this they retain their color and hold the strongest scents. However, they can cause allergic reactions and irrationality to asthma sufferers making them unsuitable for many consumers. Lastly, when burning a paraffin candle, the flame will release black toxic soot and fumes.
Beeswax Candles
Beeswax candles emit a bright warm-toned flame. They are one of the longest-lasting as they have a very high melting point due to their density. They burn slower than most and they tend to drip less. As well as this, beeswax candles when burnt release negative ions into the air, these ions bind with particle matter causing the particle matter to fall to the ground. It can be difficult to incorporate scents into beeswax as the wax emits its scent from the honey and flowers the bees have foraged on. However, beeswax is very sustainable and considered a natural by-product of the beekeeping industry. But this comes at a higher cost in comparison to soy or paraffin affecting the price of the product.
