Wimbledon New Candles Please – The History
This iconic symbol of quintessential England started in the 1870s. The inaugural Championships were held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, with an entry of 22 men. A crowd of just 200 people attended, in stark contrast, visitors now reach over 500 thousand during the tournament alone.
The 2022 Wimbledon tournament attracted 25.5 million TV viewers and streamed 53.8 million times online, setting a new record. The men’s final peaked at 7.5 million viewers, while for women, it peaked at 3.1 million.
